When and where can I get my cap and gown?

Academic attire may be rented through the Bookstore Manager, Pete Maranzano Monday through Friday, starting Monday, April 2, 2018 - Friday, April 13, 2018, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The cost is the responsibility of each individual faculty member. Ph.D. attire with tam is $108.00; master's attire is $63.00. Any orders placed after Friday, April 13, 2018, will incur a $30.00 late/handling fee. The last day to order attire, even with the late fee, is Friday, April 30, 2018.  You must wear attire to participate in the ceremony. The Office of the Provost will pay the rental fee for those who volunteer to serve as Faculty Marshals only (this does not include any late fees).

If you rent attire, you must pick up your attire at the bookstore from Monday, May 7, 2018 to Thursday, May 10, 2018, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. or Friday, May 11, 2018 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.  Attire must be returned by Friday, May 18, 2018, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. as this attire is rented and is needed for other ceremonies. Failure to return the attire on time may result in a late fee.

Where do I go and how do I get there?

The ceremony takes place at the Prudential Center, 165 Mulberry Street, Newark, NJ 07102. Directions for driving or taking public transportation to the Prudential Center can be found here. Please be mindful that you need to arrive before 8:00 a.m. and allow some extra time to go through the security check and for the heavy traffic which can be expected at that time. You will also be asked to check-in so that we have a record of who attended.

Where do I park?

Parking is available for a charge at the commercial lots near Prudential Center, as indicated on this map (jpg). Costs vary, as the lots are privately owned. Any information about discounted rates will be posted on this site, if and when it becomes available.

Where do I go after parking?

You should enter the Prudential Center through the Lafayette Street VIP Entrance located at the south side of the Prudential Center at the corner of Devil's Way and Lafayette Street. Once inside you will need to show your academic attire in order to proceed to the staging area. At this point, you will be directed to your check-in area and the appropriate room by a staff member.  Please note:  those serving as Faculty Marshals will report to the Volunteer Room prior to going to their assignments, and Ph.D. advisors report to the Ph.D. room, not the Faculty Room.

What if I have a doctoral student graduating?

In that case, you must arrive at the arena by 8:00 a.m. at the latest in order to pair up with your student and to review the doctoral diploma distribution process. When you arrive at the arena, be sure to check in with the Graduate Studies Staff who will be located at a table outside the VIP staging area.  You will then proceed to the Ph.D. assembly room, not the faculty assembly area.

Please Note: As a Ph.D. Advisor, you cannot serve as a Faculty Marshal or sit in the faculty section.

Will there be a rehearsal session?

There is no pre-commencement rehearsal. This is why it is very important that everyone arrive at the designated time. There will be signage in the Arena as well as volunteers who will direct you to the appropriate location.

How many guest tickets can I obtain?

Tickets are not distributed; all are welcome to attend. However, please limit your guests to 10.  For guests unable to attend, the ceremony will be simulcast live on the web. To view the ceremony, please visit

Where does faculty sit for the ceremony?

Faculty wearing attire will be seated in their reserved section.  The reserved faculty section will follow the reserved section for Ph.D. advisors facing the stage, far house right/stage left.  Faculty Marshals will sit amongst the students in their assigned area.  All guest seating is general admission and available on a first-come basis.

Thank you for your participation!  We look forward to seeing you on May 15, 2018.
