Frequently Asked Questions

Are faculty members expected to attend?

Yes! All faculty members are required to attend as specified in the Faculty Handbook and their participation is anticipated by the candidates. It is an excellent opportunity to mingle with your peers and the graduates, take photos, and participate in one of the university's most prestigious events.

Please Note: You can attend or volunteer for any or all three ceremonies.

When and where can I get my cap and gown?

Academic attire may be rented through the Bookstore Manager, Robin Timpanaro, Monday through Friday, starting Monday, April 1, 2019 - Wednesday, April 15, 2019, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The cost is the responsibility of each individual faculty member. Ph.D. attire with tam is $108.00; master's attire is $63.00. Any orders placed after Monday, April 15, 2019, will incur a $30.00 late/handling fee. The last day to order attire, even with the late fee, is Monday, April 29, 2019.  You must wear attire to participate in the ceremony.

If you rent attire, you must pick up your attire at the bookstore from Monday, May 13, 2019 to Thursday, May 16, 2019, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. or Friday, May 17, 2019 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.  Attire must be returned by Friday, May 24, 2019, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. as this attire is rented and is needed for other ceremonies. Failure to return the attire on time may result in a late fee.

Where do I go and how do I get there?

The ceremony takes place at the NJIT WEC, 100 Lock Street, Newark, NJ 07102. Directions for driving or taking public transportation to the WEC can be found here.  Please be mindful that you need to arrive before 9:00 a.m. and allow some extra time to go through the security check and for the heavy traffic which can be expected at that time. You will also be asked to check in so that we have a record of who attended.

Where do I park?

We recommend that faculty park in their usual staff parking lot.  Parking is also available at no charge at either of our parking decks:

  • Science & Technology Park Garage, 42 Wilsey Street, Newark, NJ
  • Parking Deck, 154 Summit Street, Newark, NJ

Please refer to the campus map

Where do I go after parking?

You should enter the WEC through the VIP Entrance/Campus Entrance located by the Upper Green and Tiernan Hall.  Once inside, you will need to show your academic attire in order to proceed to the staging area.  At this point, you will be directed to your check-in area and the appropriate room by a staff member.

Will there be a rehearsal session?

There is no pre-Commencement rehearsal. This is why it is very important that everyone arrive at the designated time. There will be signage in the WEC as well as volunteers who will direct you to the appropriate location.

Can I obtain guest tickets?

This ceremony is a ticketed event.  Guests cannot attend the ceremony without a ticket.  Due to limited space, we cannot provide guest seating for guests of faculty in the WEC.

The ceremony will be simulcast live on the web. To view the ceremony, please visit www.njit.edu.

What if I have a doctoral student graduating?

In that case, you must arrive at the arena by 9:00 a.m. at the latest in order to pair up with your student and to review the doctoral diploma distribution process. When you arrive at the arena, be sure to check in with the Graduate Studies Staff who will be located at a table outside the VIP staging area.  You will then proceed to the Ph.D. assembly room, not the faculty assembly area.

Where does faculty sit for the ceremony?

Faculty wearing attire will be seated in their reserved section on the floor with the candidates.  The reserved faculty section will be directly behind the Ph.D. advisers section.

Thank you for your participation!  We look forward to seeing you the morning of May 23, 2019.
