Frequently Asked Questions

Are faculty members expected to attend?

Yes! All faculty members are required to attend as specified in the Faculty Handbook and their participation is anticipated by the candidates. It is an excellent opportunity to mingle with your peers and the graduates, take photos, and participate in one of the university's most prestigious events.  If you would like to volunteer to serve as a Faculty Marshal, please contact your college representative listed below. The Office of the Provost will pay the rental fee for attire for those who volunteer to serve as Faculty Marshals only (this does not include any late fees.)

Please Note: You can attend or volunteer for any or all three ceremonies.

  • COAD - Meaghan O'Connor
  • CSLA - Mihaela Cohanoschi and Andrew McDermott
  • MTSOM – Devoni Hinton
  • YWCC - Stephanie Smith

When and where can I get my cap and gown?

Academic attire may be rented through the Bookstore Manager, Pete Maranzano, Monday through Friday, starting Monday, April 2, 2018 - Friday, April 13, 2018, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The cost is the responsibility of each individual faculty member. Ph.D. attire with tam is $108.00; master's attire is $63.00. Any orders placed after Friday, April 13, 2018, will incur a $30.00 late/handling fee. The last day to order attire, even with the late fee, is Friday, April 30, 2018.  You must wear attire to participate in the ceremony. The Office of the Provost will pay the rental fee for those who volunteer to serve as Faculty Marshals only (this does not include any late fees).

If you rent attire, you must pick up your attire at the Bookstore from Monday, May 7, 2018 to Thursday, May 10, 2018, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. or Friday, May 11, 2018 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.  Attire must be returned by Friday, May 18, 2018, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. as this attire is rented and is needed for other ceremonies. Failure to return the attire on time may result in a late fee.

Where do I go and how do I get there?

The ceremony takes place at the NJIT WEC, 100 Lock Street, Newark, NJ 07102. Directions for driving or taking public transportation to the WEC can be found here.  Please be mindful that you need to arrive before 8:00 a.m. and allow some extra time to go through the security check and for the heavy traffic which can be expected at that time. You will also be asked to check-in so that we have a record of who attended.

Where do I park?

We recommend faculty park in their usual staff parking lot.  Parking is also  available at no charge at either of our parking decks:

  • Science & Technology Park Garage, 42 Wilsey Street, Newark, NJ
  • Parking Deck, 154 Summit Street, Newark, NJ

Please refer to the campus map

Where do I go after parking?

You should enter the WEC through the VIP Entrance/Campus Entrance located by the Upper Green and Tiernan Hall.  Once inside you will need to show your academic attire in order to proceed to the staging area.  At this point, you will be directed to your check-in area and the appropriate room by a staff member.  Please note:  those serving as Faculty Marshals will report to the Volunteer Room, not the Faculty Room.

Will there be a rehearsal session?

There is no pre-commencement rehearsal. This is why it is very important that everyone arrive at the designated time. There will be signage in the WEC as well as volunteers who will direct you to the appropriate location.

Can I obtain Guest tickets?

This ceremony is a ticketed event.  Guests cannot attend the ceremony without a ticket.  Due to limited space, we cannot provide guest seating for guests of faculty in the WEC.

The ceremony will be simulcast live on the web. To view the ceremony, please visit www.njit.edu.

Where does faculty sit for the ceremony?

Faculty wearing attire will be seated in their reserved section on the floor with the candidates.  The reserved faculty section will be the first few rows, as needed, of both sections.  Faculty Marshals will be seated amongst the students in their assigned area.

Thank you for your participation!  We look forward to seeing you on May 17, 2018.
