Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I go and how do I get there?

The ceremony takes place at the Prudential Center, 165 Mulberry Street, Newark, NJ 07102. Directions for driving or taking public transportation to the Prudential Center can be found here. Please be mindful that you need to arrive before 8:00 a.m. to go through the security check point and allow some extra time for the heavy traffic which can be expected at that time.

Where do I park at the Prudential Center?

Guest parking is available for a charge at commercial lots near the Prudential Center (look here for a map). As an honored guest, you will receive in the mail a complimentary parking pass that will permit you to park in the "VIP Parking Area," at 19 Lafayette Street, accessed via Devils Way, off Lafayette Street between Mulberry Street and Broad Street. If you do not receive the pass by May 5, contact Colleen Vandervort.

Where do I go after parking?

Enter the Center through the Lafayette Street Security Entrance on the south side of the Prudential Center at the corner of Devils Way and Lafayette. Once inside, you will need to show your backstage pass (which will be given to you with your parking pass) in order to proceed to the lower level staging area. At this point, you will be escorted to the appropriate room by a volunteer. It is imperative that you arrive inside the Arena no later than 8:00 a.m. (or designated photo time). This will allow time for you to don academic attire, meet and mingle with the other honorees and university dignitaries, have publicity photos taken, partake of some refreshments, and to line up for the academic processional that will, for the stage party, start promptly at 8:55 am.

Will there be a rehearsal session?

There is no pre-commencement rehearsal. This is why it is very important that everyone arrive by the designated time.  There will be signage in the Arena as well as volunteers who will direct you to the appropriate location.

How many guests can I bring, and where do they sit?

There is a VIP reserved seating area for all your guests.  We will be in contact with you to find out how many VIP seating passes you will need.  You may bring one guest with you to the VIP staging area if you wish. This guest will be shown to the VIP reserved seating area to join your other guests at the time of the lineup. All other guests should go directly to the VIP seating area upon entering the Prudential Center by asking one of the ushers for assistance.  For guests unable to attend, the ceremony will be simulcast live on the web at www.njit.edu.

When and where can I get my cap and gown?

If you have your own academic attire, please bring it with you. If that is not the case, we will provide attire for you. A university representative will contact you for size information (height and cap size). Please provide this information by mid-April. When you arrive in the VIP staging area, the attire will be waiting for you and a volunteer will be there to assist you.

How can I inform the media of my honor?

Robert Florida in the Office of Strategic Communications will be coordinating publicity for Commencement, and will be pleased to help with any special requests that you may have. The Office of Strategic Communications will also arrange for photography.

Are there any other events associated with this honor?

Honorary degree recipients will have a dinner reception hosted in their honor by the president and first lady the evening before Commencement.  There will also be a luncheon after Commencement.  You will receive your invitation with the particulars directly from the Office of the President.

Congratulations on receiving NJIT's highest honor!  We look forward to seeing you on May 20, 2014.
