General Information for the May 23, 2019 Morning Graduate Ceremony


New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Commencement Exercises for candidates receiving a Ph.D. or Master’s degree from the following colleges:  College of Architecture and Design (CoAD), College of Science and Liberal Arts (CSLA), Martin Tuchman School of Management (MTSM), and Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2019, at 8:40 a.m. at NJIT’s Wellness and Events Center (WEC).  

Candidates receiving a bachelor’s degree from any college, or a Ph.D. or master’s degree from Newark College of Engineering (NCE) will not participate in this ceremony.

This ceremony is a ticketed event.  You cannot attend the ceremony without a ticket.  Ph.D. candidates will have up to eight guest tickets they can claim for the ceremony, and master's candidates will have up to four tickets they can claim for the ceremony.  Tickets have been reserved for each candidate on the Registrar's ListWe ask that you claim only those tickets you intend to use.  All unclaimed tickets will be made available for those needing additional tickets.

** Candidates must claim any or all of their guest tickets at any time from 12 noon on Monday, April 22, 2019,  to Friday, May 3, 2019, at 12 noon.

To claim tickets, candidates must go to the the "Candidate Information" tab for access as only candidates can claim tickets.

All ticketing for the WEC Commencement ceremonies will be processed online; you do not need to pick up tickets.

Tickets not claimed after 12 noon on May 3, 2019 will automatically become the property of NJIT.  All unclaimed tickets will then go into a general lottery where candidates can claim one additional ticket while supplies last. This will be done on a first-come, first served basis starting at 12 noon on Monday, May 6, 2019.  All seating for guests of candidates is general admission, and available on a first-come basis; guests are not permitted to reserve or block off seating. If you attempt to do so, WEC security will enforce the policy.

Candidates participating in the event do not need a ticket to enter; their reader card serves as their ticket.

IMPORTANT NOTE: NJIT prohibits the direct or indirect sale or auction of All-University Commencement tickets. Ticket(s) may not be used for advertising, promotion (including contests, giveaways or sweepstakes) or other trade or commercial purposes.  Students engaging in such activities, as well as any other activity that disrupts the administration of the ceremony and/or violates any NJIT student conduct policy, will be subject to disciplinary sanctions.

Please allow ample time for morning traffic and for the required WEC security checkpoint.

  • 8:30 a.m. - Wellness and Events Center opens doors; guests and participants proceed through Security
  • 9:40 a.m. - Processional begins
  • 10:00 a.m. - Ceremony begins **
  • 11:30 a.m. - Approximate end time for the ceremony

** Please note: All candidates are required to stay the duration of the ceremony to give the same courtesy to the last student whose name is called as was given to the first.  In the event that guests are leaving before the end of the ceremony, candidates are reminded to make alternative transportation arrangements, as they will not be permitted to leave early.

The ceremony takes place on the NJIT campus at the Wellness and Events Center (WEC) located at 100 Lock Street, Newark, NJ 07102.

Directions for driving or taking public transportation to NJIT can be found here. Please remember that Commencement falls on a weekday, so you will need to allow some extra time for heavy traffic.  


Parking is available at no charge at either of our parking decks; we recommend that guests carpool:

Seating for Candidates

As you face the stage, Ph.D.candidates will be seated in the first few rows house left/stage right, followed by the master's candidates from MTSoM and then the Computer Science master's candidates from YWCC.

As you face the stage, seated house right/stage left will be the Ph.D. advisers, followed by the faculty, then the master’s candidates from CoAD, CSLA, and then all other majors from YWCC other than Computer Science. 

Seating charts and program books will be distributed at the WEC.

Guest Seating

This ceremony is a ticketed event.  You cannot attend the ceremony without a ticket.  All seats for guests of candidates are general admission and available on a first-come basis; guests are not allowed to reserve or block off seating.  If you attempt to do so, WEC staff will enforce the policy.

We suggest you refer to the "Seating for Candidates" section above so that you can get a better idea of where your candidate is seated and therefore you can plan your seating accordingly.

Accessibility Parking

For your convenience, in addition to the accessibilty parking spaces in our parking deck and garage, we have designated lots 5 and 10 as accessibilty parking.  Please see the highlighted yellow area in this campus map.  Guests in need of assistance should be dropped off curbside near the entrances; guests will see the appropriate signage.


Wheelchair Assistance 

If you need a wheelchair to assist you in entering the building or if you will require a wheelchair for the duration of the ceremony, you must bring your own.  Please note:  Ramps are provided for entrance through both the Warren Street and Lock Street entrances.  

The WEC has a limited number of wheelchairs made available to our guests once they have entered the building.  Outside of the WEC, wheelchairs will not be available.

Once inside, you can request assistance from the WEC staff. You do not need to reserve a wheelchair as they are made available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please refer to the following steps.

  • Guests in need of assistance should be dropped off curbside near the entrances; guests will see the appropriate signage.
  • In addition to the accessibility parking in the parking deck and parking garage, Lots 5 and 10 will serve as accessibility parking only.
  • Upon entering, please inform the WEC staff that you will need a wheelchair.
  • Once you have received a wheelchair, an usher will escort you and your family to your seats.
  • There are elevators to assist you in getting to the proper location.
  • Once the usher has brought you to your seat, they will then return to the entrance with the wheelchair to assist other guests.
  • At the conclusion of the ceremony, an usher will return with a wheelchair to escort you to an exit.  The staff will need to accommodate all those they originally escorted to their seats, so we ask that you please be patient as they try to get everyone out as quickly as possible.

What NOT to bring

For safety reasons, guests are refused entry, or ejected from the facility, if they are in possession of prohibited items. Illegal items will be confiscated and turned over to the police.
The following items are not permitted at the WEC:

  • aerosol cans
  • alcoholic beverages
  • animals / pets (except service animals)
  • balloons, beach balls, silly string
  • cans, thermoses, bottles, glass or other beverage containers
  • coolers or ice chests
  • clothing containing vulgar language
  • illegal drugs
  • large bags and purses (with the exception of a small clutch purse)
  • laser pens and pointers
  • noisemaking devices (i.e. whistles, air horns, drums, horns, vuvuzelas)
  • outside food and beverage
  • professional photography equipment (other than a camera)
  • selfie sticks and GoPros
  • poles to display banners, flags, etc.
  • signs with wires, lights, and/or batteries
  • skateboards and/or rollerblades
  • strollers
  • un-approved pamphlets, handouts, advertisements, etc.
  • weapons (i.e. knives, pepper spray, tear gas, handcuffs, stun guns, etc.)
  • any other item deemed to be inappropriate or dangerous by WEC Management and/or the NJIT Police Department.
